Whitening is a fantastic way of brightening your smile without any weakening or loss of tooth tissue.

Time, smoking, tea and coffee are just a few of the things that cause your teeth to yellow and discolour over time.  Whiter teeth can take years off your appearance and with a little care and maintenance along the way the results can last a long time.

Although the teeth themselves whiten well, any fillings or crowns will remain the same colour and may need replacing to match the new lighter colour of your teeth.

Tooth whitening is based on the application of a hydrogen peroxide based gel.  Plenty of dental and non-dental organisations promise to whiten your teeth but as with most things – it is not always quite what it says on the tin.  It is always best to get the job done right and get the job done once, it will save you time, disappointment and money.

There are 2 methods for tooth whitening:

  1. In surgery – Power whitening £600.00
  2. Home based – Tray whitening  £300.00
  3. Whitening top up gels £24 each

We have extensive experience with both types of whitening systems and a detailed knowledge of whitening gel types and concentrations.  We will ensure the correct method will be chosen to suit your smile, giving you a predictable pleasing result.

Even if you do not choose our practice to whiten your teeth, please ensure a General Dental Council  (GDC) Registered Professional undertakes the treatment who can personally and comfortably resolve any possible complications.  Seeking specialist advice after the event, will be costly and could have been prevented.  The GDC protects the interests of all patients and only the professionals on its register should be performing dentistry.

Some teeth whiten to the desired colour after 1 week but heavily stained teeth can take upto 6 months using a combination of whitening methods.  In our home whitening kits, you receive 24 nights worth of gel, which most of our patients find has some left over for a whitening top up after 12 months.

It is a myth, the higher the whitening gel concentration, the whiter your teeth go.  Teeth have a natural level of achievable whiteness, irrelevant of gel concentration.  Whitening is a complex science, only with the correct administration of gels for your individual treatment plan, will you reach your goal.

Just as the gel type is important, the method used to isolate the gel to tooth tissue is vital for safe predictable results.  With the help of a specialist cosmetic laboratory, my methods prevent gum damage and saliva contamination, which neutralises the whitening gel action.

When can I replace the yellow crowns or fillings after whitening?

Only natural tooth tissue will change shade and colour.  Following the whitening process your old restorations can be renewed to seamlessly match your new tooth colour.  We recommend you wait 7 days post whitening treatment before old restorations are replaced with new whiter ones.

– Moderate your intake of high tannin foods and drinks

– Stop smoking

– brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste- we tend to recommend the Oral-B brand

– use an electric tooth brush as it removes food debri more effectively than a manual tooth brush

– cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks- maximum once per week

– visit your dentist regularly

– regular hygienist cleans

– Consider airflow tooth polishing

  1. No whitening is permanent. Maintenance is needed to keep that bright smile.
  2. Only a dentist can get your teeth to the maximum whiteness.
  3. See a dentist first to check teeth are healthy before starting. Teeth and gums can become permanently sensitive if they are not healthy first.
  4. There is no evidence that whitening toothpastes can actually whiten your teeth
  5. Unregulated Whitening kits can at best do nothing and at worse some of those bought abroad or over the internet can actually harm your teeth as they contain acids/abrasives that can cause permanent damage.
